I’ve had Woodstock-themed costumes and playlists for years. So of course when a new race, the WoodsStock 10K, was announced as the second in the Heartland 30K Series, the wheels started to spin for a new angle. I thought for a while it just would be a more complete outfit than the tie-dye singlet and/or shorts I have. I decided, however, to go the route of authenticity-over-caricature via TIME-Life’s photojournalism. I think I nailed the look of this anonymous attendee. Perhaps he was my dad’s college roommate? No joke, my dad attended college a few hours’ drive from Yasgur’s Farm but was working during the festival. His roommate went and enjoyed it but said, “It was very crowded.” The 10K was anything but crowded as late at 7:25, long after I arrived via a warmup mile. Age group award, here I come, right!? Except it started at 8, not 7:30 like I thought. Better that mistake than the reverse. The course was largely like the typical 10K in Corporate Woods, with a slight modification for an out-and-back in very toasty sun. NOBODY could tell when I took the shirt off!
Everything from Amazon at some point, and the aforementioned shirt resides in a tote in my costume cave labeled “Simulated Nudity”
