Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, varying between the visitation of misadventure and a victory of vestment. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me add that it is my very good honor to say that this verbalization must now vanish.
I started planning this one as soon as I saw what date this year’s Longview half/10K/5K fell on. Sadly, it ended up being virtual for me. I was in the parking lot and had spent 20 minutes applying the “mask” – it looked OK but not stunning – while the SNOW blew in sideways. Nothing I was wearing was going to stand up to that weather. I almost said “screw it, I’ll try anyway” but as I started to walk to the start line with the umbrella straining not to break, the hat blew right off and the bangs-less wig covered 80% of my face. So, I went home. Stayed in the costume and makeup for another 6-7 hours, took a nap (on a towel just in case of smears), ate lunch, and headed for Westport and midtown. Still plenty of mishaps head to toe, but at least a few people recognized who/what I was meant to be. One person called me “El toro” (bull), and a desperate stranded motorist asked if I could fill up her car. Um, yeah, let me just pop open the spare fuel tank I keep under my cloak!
