For all the I’m-really-not-ready going on today, this was a pretty good one. Procrastination and trying to do things that have no precedent I could find leads to lots of last-minute prep. I was absolutely not trained for the race itself. The hills of Liberty are knight-slaying dragons, that’s for sure. My slowest half ever by 4+ minutes, so yeah, evaluating whether there are 2 more in me in the 4 weeks to come. The inspiration for the costume is a piece of public art called “Open Heart” by Matthew Duffy, installed in Liberty next to the pickleball courts. It features prominently on the race medal and t-shirt, plus banners around town. To create: a layer or so of saran wrap and 2ish layers of duct tape to create a flexible/cuttable mold of my upper body. I drew the points where the metal comes together, then the connecting lines, and cut around them. The front has a network of pieces of foam board under the metal-look vinyl, but the back didn’t get that treatment. If you knew the sculpture, you got it pretty quickly. People from outside of Liberty, not so much. Curious to see what I might get to imitate next year… Congrats to my run fam for big-time accomplishments, some of whom actually got PRs or course bests today, 2 brand-new pacers, and to Fran who ran her 50th half! Also, a new experience for Mrs. Cosplay Runner who helped at one of the last water stations with others from our church. Water and a kiss? Yes, please!
You know how they say, “Nothing new on race day?” New items: UA Heat Gear compression shirt and shorts, Zensah calf sleeves, and Nike headband. Almost all of it just new colors of stuff I know fits and works for me. One-inch diamond plate vinyl tape from Paper Street Plastics.
