Week 261, April 5: Make it so (Autism Society -The Heartland 5K)

Just 38 years from today, scientist Zefram Cochrane will successfully test a warp-capable vessel, getting the attention of a nearby Vulcan starship. The Vulcans will make First Contact, Earth will join the United Federation of Planets, and a couple centuries later, a very handsome Frenchman will speak with gravitas and unexplained Shakespearean diction from the most famous bridge that technically won’t be built for a long, long time. And that’s a very abbreviated account. Hanging out with friends at the Autism Society – The Heartland 5K today reminds me of the amazing ability some autistic people have to know ALL the things about a very specific topic. Today my very specific topic was the character arc of Captain (later Commodore) Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek universe. Yes, he has a red uniform, but captains always survive away missions. It was cold, gloomy, and windy today, so maybe some folks stayed away, but I enjoyed seeing those that braved it. Afterwards, the Just-Us League crew was around for pics. I had additional miles planned, but it was just too cold and I’m trying to steer my vessel (body) out of sickness the past week plus, so I played it safe. That also means the Heartland 39.3 Series extra swag will wait for another year for me, as I’m now doing the shorter distances for Rock The Parkway Half Marathon (5K) and Garmin Olathe Marathon (10K).

Starfleet uniform costume top with communicator badge and rank pips by Rubies – getting the correct pips in the right place was a chore… those little things are hard to handle in a stiff wind!
