Not Stitch the alien, not a frozen groundhog. Nope, this guy comes straight from the Cave of Wonders! I had thought of a different theme and costume for 2025, before last year’s race, obviously. But a conversation with a fellow runner about cave ideas prompted a switch to this blue fellow with a year to plan. So of course that meant a trip to JoAnn the night before and barely making it to the 10K start line in time to stretch. But I think they both looked perfect. As ever, I question my sanity when I start the final 5K lap out of 3. The “Tunnel to Tunnel” event is both the 5K at 8 AM and the 10K at 10. It’s a long stretch, and not really the same as 15K all at once, or even a half marathon. There’s not much one can do to keep muscles warmed and stretched for over an hour, so you just make it work. The VIP experience was worth not waiting for the shuttle bus at the front end, and having real bathrooms instead of port-a-loos, but the long walk back to the car in the muddy lot used up most of what energy I had left for the day.
