Ah, the #DIY pinnacle of my season! As in previous years, this one has been in planning since just before last year’s Garmin Kansas City Marathon. And, just like previous years, it didn’t get 100% finished until early this morning. As I’ve done since 2021, it’s a favorite fountain from City of Fountains Foundation, “Boy and Frog.” [In front of the former Starbucks location on the Country Club Plaza and near the intersection of Nichols Road and Central Street, this amusing little fountain is an original work by Raffaello Romanelli. It was purchased for the Plaza in 1928 by John C. Taylor, who was the Chairman of the Board for the J.C. Nichols Company. A bronze sculpture of a nude boy stands in the middle of a marble basin. He has his hands up with a look of either surprise or delight as he looks down at the frog spraying water up at him. The marble basin is held up by a faun sitting on top of a dolphin. The faun has a rather distressed look on his face, either from the weight of his burden
or from missing out on the fun the boy is having above.]
I was the faun, of course, and the head piece was the fountain part. I think it’s time to look at pricing a 3D printer, because this thing was just too heavy to wear. I couldn’t even balance it with elastic ties, let alone attach it and run. The playlist went through 3 cycles of Boy, Frog, Faun/Pan, Dolphin, Fountain/Water, and Italian music contemporary to Signore Romanell. There are other fountains and statuary by him in the metro, so he might appear again some year.
Kind of too many sources to list this time. Satyr pants and mask from HalloweenCostumes.com, heavily modified.
