Week 201, races #2 and 3, January 28: We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving (Groundhog Run Tunnel to Tunnel 5K and 10K)

Always a favorite at the Groundhog Run. I did the Tunnel to Tunnel combo again, 5K at 8 AM and the 10K at 10. I thought we had left early enough to allow time for parking, but the backup at 7:10 was well onto the highway. I grabbed my costume and drop bag and hustled across, with help from one of the police at the intersection. I got my Cyndi Lauper wig on and did my best to get the clip-on bling set up. Two of the three survived. When I found Mrs. Cosplay Runner after the 5K, I asked if she had remembered the fake mustache that’s been stuck to the dashboard for almost a year (I’m weird, you know this already). She had not. I considered going back to said car in between, but the same woes still plagued the bus line, so I punted. That (Hall and) Oates look comes to you courtesy of a borrowed Sharpie from the VIP area. Yes, it actually came off, mostly with just a Huggies wipe. Favorite interactions of the morning: the water stop volunteers on my final lap that said, “We missed you!”, the runner who ran backwards for a bit and asked if I’d lost a bet, and the corral-mate who said he wants my autograph next race. Yes sir! Oh, and the meaning of the costume… On this night 39 years ago, the collective of artists known as United Support of Artists (USA) for Africa gathered to record the historic single “We Are the World.” It was released in March that year. All songs on the playlists were either on the LP or were one of the latest singles by the featured soloists.
